[comp.sys.xerox] Interpress

ring@cg-atla.UUCP (Steve Ring) (04/29/88)

What is the state of Interpress at Xerox? On which machines are they
supporting the full graphics implementation? Is this the right place to
discuss Interpress?

Does anyone know of a way to view Interpress files in another environment
(such as X Windows) or of a way to convert Interpress files to something
else (such as Postscript/Ghostscript).

Thankyou,

Daniel

Ive asked this question some time ago and got 0 replies. The only thing I can
offer is that Xerox are working on or maybe by now have released a Postscript
"driver" for the Viewpoint and XPS systems, but dont quote me.

I have some Postscript files generated from Viewpoint documents
lurking aroung somewhere so the technology exists. Xerox lost
interest in telling us anything about Postscript when they realised we
were not about to buy a phototypesetter. (We asked their salesmen
about it again a few months ago - promised information not delivered,
only a "would you like to buy VP for sparcstations" leaflet.)

To answer the original question "Does anyone know of a way..." I
suspect that the only answer is for one of us who wants it to write
one. I have a few functions that decode Interpress files into
operations and operands but no time to do any more. Anyone
volunteering to take it further is welcome to a copy.

Owen.

If you are going to develop an Interpress -> PostScript converter, be
aware of the following:

	a) Some of the maths is rather tricky
	b) Allow the order of a man year to do a good job
	c) It will be very slow
	d) It will be difficult to support some INTERPRES operators (but
I can't remember which, it's a couple of years since we did
this, CORRECT requires two passes over the evaluation stack
as I recall, which makes it very slow if it is used to
	   perform justification.)

The present Interpress -> postscript enging (written byy us where us =
Kernel Technology NOT Birmingham University where I post this from) will
only support phototypesetters, and will not work on Apple LaserWriters
or other PostScript printers. This is an explicit trap because Xerox
clearly don't want to loose sales of their printers to the competition.

(Excuse the bouncy keyboard - I'll get a new one some day)

I speak for me alone.
