The solution:- As I reported earlier, I was unable to get the WYSE 1100 PC to recognize the ST225 Hard Disk and Western Digital Disk controller. WYSE was unable to help, but they did try. Computer solution (where we bought the drives) tried to help also, they called WYSE and Western Digital as well as walked me through the procerdure again. The result was that WYSE didn't think the WD controller and their computer were compatable and I was ready to install the 225s into some New Z248s that were just delivered and reorder hard disks for the WYSE at about 5X the price. From somewhere, probably the the patron saints of incompetent computer hackers, (I wonder who that is?) came the notion of trying PC-DOS. Leaving out the checks and double checks- 1. Boot with PC-DOS (I used 2.1x and 3.1 for the AT). 2. Run debug per the WD instructions. After the drive is working 3. Re-boot with WYSE version of MS-DOS and repeate the process and you are home free! The program 'optileave' by Jim Bates, PD from our HZBB does a nice job of LowLevel formatting. It formats the first two tracks at all interleave options from 16 to 1 and then reformats the disk at the optimum speed. I don't know if will work on a Z100, the author says it will NOT work on 80286 machines. The 3 drives I have installed had interleavinmg at 4 with about 1/3 reduction in read and write times over interlacing at 3. Earnie
