[comp.sys.zenith.z100] Painter's Apprentice Now Available

GUBBINS@RADC-TOPS20.ARPA (Gern) (01/29/88)

Painter's Apprentice is a Z-100 'MockPaint' which is in most ways
superior to that on the Apple MAC. It was written by Russ Nelson
at Clarkson University where it was made available to the 3000+ students
with Clarkson Issued Z-100s. It was also written to prove that the
Z-100 capability was as good, if not better, than the MAC. ZDS had
some sort of arrangement and was selling it for around $79 in the Heath
catalog - with zero description, no mention that a mouse is required,
and no Fan Fare that it richly deserves. As silently as it appeared
in the catalog, it is now dropped. It should be a crime the way ZDS
showed zero promotional effort to PA (and many other programs as well).
I only hope that ZDS lost money on the deal...

Anyhow ZDS's mess up is now our gain as the author is now able to
make it available directly by USnail.

I will step out on a limb and say that Painter's Apprentice is THE BEST
program I have ever seen written for the Z-100 to make use of the
video hardware and is a powerful design and drawing tool. Every Z-100
owner should have it. I will start putting PA Image files in the
PD LIB soon. It is now at a price everyone can afford.

You need a mouse (save yourself the software driver hassle with other
programs and get a REAL Microsoft mouse) to use it. The package
also includes utilities, Fonts, and a mouse driven COMMAND.COM replacement.
Oh ya, you must get a Serial Mouse. To run with Z-100 MS-Windows, the
mouse must be MS-Mouse HARDWARE compatible (ie. Built by Microsoft).

Cheers,
Gern

Disclaimer - I am just a very satisfied user of Painter's Apprentice
and have nothing to do with it. Sure, I know Russell Nelson, he was
a Grad Student when I was an Undergrad at Clarkson. He is now some
sort of advisory/assistant/something to the Dean of Educational Computing.
I would still make the same recommendations even if I didn't know
him - So There!

Rember that any program that comes with a MS-WINDOWS run time lib or
claimes that it runs under MS-WINDOWS in a IBM-PC will run on MS-WINDOWS
in the HZ-100.

There are quite a few WINDOWS programs out now. The only thing that
stops us from running the newest ver of excel is WINDOWS2 and a 286.

idia: If someone gets a copy of WINDOWS2 for the IBM (I just have 386
windows) you can copy your 100 drivers onto it and make a 100 ver and
run EXCEL with a v20!!! Now that would be cool.
