What is shar/unshar and what is it used for? Also, what are arc files (besides being archives) how do you de-arc them. And what's this I hear about self de-arcing files, uuencoded files etc. and how do I get this stuff from the VAX to it's proper form on my z-100? Sorry for all the questions but it sounds like there's a bunch of stuff out there that could be of use to me but my ignorance prevents me from accessing it. Thanks in advance... If you "can't FTP outside" then you can't get any of the programs on outside hosts. Consult your System Wizard. I have no idea what shar/unshar is. ARCs are ARChives of (hopefully) related files/programs that are contained in a single data compressed structured file. Text file archives are usually 48% to 53% smaller. You use the PD ARC (ARC500 is latest) program(s) to add/eXtract. ARC is VERY Slow. PKARC (to Add/List/etc) and PKXARC (to eXtract) are shareware programs that are VERY FAST to perform the same functions. Once you sucessfully FTP a program to your host, you then use the host's KERMIT and your Z-100 KERMIT to download. This is assuming someone has been nice enough to install KERMIT on your Host. Other means are site specific. Good Luck and Keep Trying... Gern -------
