[comp.sys.zenith.z100] BESTERM vs. KERMIT

GRIEB@LOCKE.HS.WASHINGTON.EDU (CINDY GRIEB) (06/02/88)

I, for one, use KERMIT. It's simple, easy to use, and does everything I
want it to. I might have switched to BESTERM instead (it does seem to
be a nice program), but it has one fatal flaw for my usage -- it uses up
too many function keys. I am quite used to using the function keys (plus
ins/del chr/line) with my mainframe editor and it would be a giant step
backwards (for me) to use a communications program that doesn't allow me
to use the function keys remotely.

I, for two, do too. :-) For most of the same reasons also - but Kermit
has the one additional feature of being able to re-define virtually any
of the machine's keys. That means that you can set up your function
(arrow, etc.) keys to do whatever it is that you want them to do on
whatever machines that you use. I find that feature to be very useful.

The only thing (that I can see) that Kermit lacks which BesTerm has is
Xmodem file xfers.

The latest Kermit-MS is available for anonymous ftp from
CU20B.CC.COLUMBIA.EDU. Filenames are:
ker:mstibm.boo (pc - gag!)
ker:mstz10.boo (z100)
