[comp.sys.zenith.z100] Z100 power supply fix?

pault@hcx1.SSD.HARRIS.COM (10/03/88)

A short time ago, someone posted a note about replacing a small component
in a blown z100 power supply. The note said that replacing the fuse was
not enough; that some other component needs to be replaced as well.
Unfortunately, I didn't save this off; and wouldn't you know, yesterday
the fuse blew in my power supply.

The local H/Z outlet wants $230 (and 10 days delay) for a new power supply.
This is no bargain, as used, complete systems are going for as low as $5-600.

Could the person who posted the power supply repair note please repost it?
It would be greatly appreciated.

You might be referring to me. I am in the exact situation that you are.
I took my power suppy apart, replaced the fuse and it blew again. I haven't
had much chance to look at it any further. In my query, I was making
reference to Gern's very good article on the z100 power supply wherein
it suggests that you take the PC boards out of the supply, check for bad
solder joints and heat scoring on the leads (I haven't gotten this far
yet). He also suggests some components that might be bad, but that's shooting
in the dark for someone like me. I don't have the article online. Perhaps
Gern will send it to you or repost it. If I don't find anything obviously
wrong from looking at the boards, I don't know what to do. I'm not much
for trouble shooting the components. I might break down and buy a new
suppy from Zenith just to get a working computer again. If any one has
a cheaper source for a new or rebuilt supply, I'd sure like to know it.
