As I hit the last page of my latest Heaps*it catalog (and was about to toss it) I saw a new product: streaming tape drive for about $380, primarily to replace existing drives but with with a $200 [wow!] standalone adapter. Anybody know anything about it? Do I correctly infer that it will NOT work with the HZ-100, even if external? (I'll ask Heath that question.) What's its competition, since $375 is probably down around my pain threshold? --- Don Malpass [malpass@LL-vlsi.arpa], [malpass@spenser.ll.mit.edu] The Malpass Principle: Given a binary choice, the statistical probability of doing the right thing is 31.7% - on good days.

You can always by the interface to hook into a VCR. You would get the dual use of the VCR and tape back-up. I am not sure if they work on the '100 but it would be worth investigating. Jesse Sherman

As it happens, I have an OLD OLD Betamax (back when they cost $1300) that is gathering dust, and I'm too proud to chuck it out since it still "works". Can you offer any solid pointers to products which might make use of it? I'm only interested in doing a WHOLE-DISK backup on such a thing (eg I can live with manual operation), since I can do monthly incremental backups on floppys. But it has to be reliable enough that I'm willing to reformat my hard disks and not worry about restoring from it. And I s'pose I'd be willing to use either my newer Beta or my VHS vcr for the same purpose if I really thought it was super reliable. Any suggestions? --- Don Malpass [malpass@LL-vlsi.arpa], [malpass@spenser.ll.mit.edu] The Malpass Principle: Given a binary choice, the statistical probability of doing the right thing is 31.7% - on good days.

I never had any knowledge of using them. I thought maybe it would be an option. Thanks for the pointers. :-)) Jesse
