I noticed a posting in a recent Info-IBMPC digest from Jeff Nucciarone of Penn State University concerning some problems he's having getting a Seagate ST238 RLL-type hard disk to work correctly in a Zenith Z148. I offered to re-post his problem since I don't think he has easy access to the body of expertise you represent out there in NetLand! Any suggestions can either be posted here or MAIL to him at JSN%PSUARCH.BITNET@CUNYVM.CUNY.EDU. ======================= from Jeff Nucciarone =========================== Hello and thank you for your reply. The problems I am having are as follows: The FAT randomly gets chewed up-- invalid clusters mostly; thus files are lost or are rendered unusable. I can repair the damage with CHKDSK/F, leave the machine idling for an hour, try something, and find a freshly damaged FAT. (I checked for viral infection and found none) Files have a bad habit of getting cross linked on clusters 255 and 8. KEDIT sometimes will start to load, but stop. Other programs that load other files at startup sometimes (but not always) suddenly leave the machine hanging. EUREKA wont even run off the hard disk! (Runs great off floppy!) So as you can see, I'm perplexed. The HD controller self tests all show all is well, and MACE and NORTON all say the disk media is well. Someone had mentioned to me that Zenith hard coded in the BIOS 17 sectors/track. So before I yank the drive out and sell the machine, I'd like to know if something can be patched! Again, thanks for the help! --Jeffrey J.
