[comp.sys.zenith.z100] PROGRAM LANGUAGE

mraustad@infocenter.UUCP (Mike Raustad) (07/08/89)

Does anyone in netland know where I can obtain C program language
for a z100. My brother has a z100 and is a programmer. He would like
a good programming language that is compatible with a z100, but I dont
know where to start. Since he was kind enough to buy the system from
me, I feel sort of obligated to help him out.

Anyone know where I can obtain a good language?

Thanks in advance.

I used Turbo C 1.5 in line mode (the TCC compiler) for several months
on my Z-100. I have not tried compiling Turbo C 2.0 on the Z-100,
but I do know they changed the run time package slightly (they call
the IBM format of the BIOS for the timer ticks) so that running Turbo
2.0 code on the Z-100 causes a wild interrupt. This can be fixed,
since they give source to the startup routine, but I didn't bother.

Note that not all of the runtime library supplied with Turbo 1.5 will
run on a Z-100, for example I never even loaded the graphics library.

I use Mix C - the price fits ($19.95) and it seems to do what it is spposed
to do. Microsoft C is my partner's choice, but he has more money to blow
than I do.
There apparently is a patch to allow Turbo C to run on the '100, but I
haven't tried it. Most any C for MS-DOS will work except those that do
full screen stuff during compiles. I can't use Mix's debugger, and my
buddy can't use Codeview. I'd go with Mix.

I have been using AZTEC C on the 100 with good results. As others have
noted, you can't use the I*M PC specfic functions, but the rest works
OK. As a matter of fact, by writing/compiling generic MSDOS code on
the 100, it has the advantage of running without recompiling on
the inferior type MSDOS machines.
