(It has been called to my attention that this article was mangled in the
transmission, thus I am re-posting it. Sorry about any duplication (our
site has temporarily lost incoming news somewhere upstream, and it probably
has something to do with this article being thrashed)
--------------------------------------------------------------------------
I like to fantasize that there are hundreds of VMS users out
there secretly reading the netnews over Eunice or UUCP. There they
are, hunched over their keyboards late at night, a 100-watt glow cast
over intense, bloodshot eyes devouring the latest entries to SF-lovers
and turning away unix-wizards, as usual (they keep meaning to take it
off their subscription list, but it comforts them to read it
occasionally). They sit facing the door; ready to pop into EDT at
the slightest sign of the approach of a PWB colleague ("don't wanna
give the impression that I am being converted or some such
nonsense!"). Surely such anxiety is harmful. Just the eyestrain of
their weekly reading must entitle them to additional workman's
compensation.
Can these people be helped? Only through care and an expanded
sense of community belonging can these networms achieve a parity in
status, so much deserved in the VAX world.
Please help.
Support a net.VMS newsgroup. (I also suggest a net.VMS.silly
group for all those who would like to spend their time arguing merits
of VMS vs. UNIX)
By the way, I am a VMS user and proud of it. I LIKE VMS, and I
LIKE USENET (and, for the record, many other UNIX utilities). I
selfishly want the best of both worlds.
VMS users (and others), let me know what you think of this.
