This is off the top of my head, so dont quote its accuracy. The laptop drive connector has a pin that enables the output buffers for all the signals to the external drive. This pin has to be grounded for the drive to work properly. Look on the connector pinouts for an pin labled "drvenb" or somthing like that. This was proabably put in for RFI purposes. Without a drive connected, all the output lines are effectivly dead and dont emit RFI noise. IF you cant find the pin, email me and I'll dig up a manual somewhere.
