MOST 8" drives do NOT shut off, they always spin the disks. Yes, it is a pain. If memory serves, the 8" drives used AC motors somewhat directly off the AC line and due to the technology of the day/start-up times/cheapness/ etc... they just were designed that way. Very later specially made 8" drives used DC motors and acted like what we modern computerists expect by shutting off (The ads extolled this new feature) but very few people have these as the 8" drives were fading out.
