[comp.sys.zenith.z100] Hard disk info? Send me some too

borne@stsci.EDU (Kirk D. Borne) (10/05/90)

In article <187@salt.UUCP>, snow@china.uu.net (John Snow) asks for
information on the installation and implementation of a Seagate
hard disk drive. I would like to know the same stuff ... so would
anyone responding to John please post their knowledge here, or else CC: to my
e-mail address below.
Thanks.

I just went through this a couple of months ago, and there are several
knowledgable users who came to my rescue (such as GERN and Doc Savage)!
Basically, Z100 hard disks are attached via a data separator board
"bolted" to the top of the hard drive assembly and a Z217 controller board
that drops into any empty slot in the card cage. I had an original Z100
10 MB hard disk that died, and needed to replace it with a handy ST225.
All I had to do was unplug one drive and plug in the other. Then the
PREP and FORMAT stages, and I had a larger (working!) hard disk.

If you never had a Z100 hard disk, and so you're short the Z217 and the
data separator board, you'll have a bit of a parts hunt. There are sources,
and this newsgroup may put you onto some. But don't give up..what you
want to do has been done countless times with little sweat and no pain!

kit includes a standard PC-compatible hard drive controller and an
S-100 card that adapts the controller to the Z-100's bus. The
controller is an MFM type, so the ST-225 should work fine. (We used
an ST-138 (MFM) that was lying around.)

UCI claims that the regular Z-100 PREP and PART should work, but they
also provide their own formatting utility which we used (successfully).
The only problem we ran into was mounting the PC HD controller: the
hardware provided (double-stick foamy tape) didn't fit the particular
controller card they sent. We just made our own sticky-foam mount.
The setup has worked fine for about 3 months now.

I don't have UCI's address handy (I will look up and E-mail to
interested parties), but we paid $288 for our kit from a distributor,
