Peter, I try hard not to be a salesman, and I understand that it's easy to misinterpret other people's work. However, I'm just quoting what I've received from the publisher -- MANY ads about the Minix book that begin "UNIX FOR $79.95?" The ads go on to say that what you get is a UNIX system and a text that describes it. They mention specific UNIX utilities by name. They talk about how it's based on Version 7 UNIX. If Minix is not UNIX, then the ads are just plain misleading, if not unethical. As for Xinu, it didn't start life as a teaching system -- it's began as a research project and continues to be used for that. I have several Ph.D. students who have explored operating system design or are using Xinu as a platform for experimental work in the distributed systems area. It's used at other universities as well. That's what keeps pushing Xinu forward. Cheers, Doug
