[comp.os.xinu] xinu vs others

Jerry,

2 volumes vs. 1
Sure, 2 volumes of Xinu costs more than one of other books -- use
them in your network course and you're ahead!

PC edition:
It's definitely out and in the bookstores. I see no reason why
Canada would be a year behind the U.S. -- call Jim Fegen at Prentice
Hall (201) 592-3122 and he'll get help you get them immediately.

Other versions:
I'm revising volume I for the Macintosh right now. Volume II will
follow. I'd do a Sun version if I had time. [Anyone out there want
to work with me on it?]

Compilers:
You're right. We're not sending out compilers with the PC/VAX/Mac/Sun
software. The reason is simple: after 10 years of fighting the battle,
we decided to use commercially available compilers. The compilers we
sent out for the 11 and early 8086 came from Bell Labs and Berkeley,
but they required tons of maintenance. Every time a new machine came
along someone would ask us to adapt them. And we found lots of little
bugs over the years. Anyway, I decided that it wasn't worth the pain.
Come on, can't your University afford a compiler or two?

Mac update:
Your *FREE* Mac update went out about a week ago (and you should
have received electronic mail verifying this). We've sent out tons
of them as promised. are you runing a slam campaign? Were you paid
to say nasty things?

Puzzled,
Doug
