[comp.os.xinu] When is Xinu no longer Xinu?

brian@ncrcan.Toronto.NCR.COM (Brian Onn) (05/09/89)

I am interested to know what other Xinu users/developers are doing with
Xinu? I know of two projects within NCR where Xinu is used or has been
used (device controllers) but was curious to find out what others use Xinu
for.

Also, when does Xinu cease to be Xinu?? By this I mean, how far can you
modify, expand, enhance etc the base Xinu code, yet still call it Xinu?

I am considering using Xinu on a 286/386 based PC as the OS for a dedicated
LAN Server. Xinu seems to be founded upon the "one address space, global
variables" concept. If I start hacking on the base code to give it
separate user/kernal address spaces, a decent file system, memory protection,
virtual memory, etc, is it still Xinu? or is it Un*x!!

Also, so that I don't re-invent the wheel, has Xinu already been made to
run in protected mode on the 80286? If so, where is that code available
from? If not, then after I do it, is there some Xinu archive that would
like to have the code, so that someone else doesn't have to re-invent the
proverbial wheel.

Thanks,
	Brian.
