[comp.os.xinu] TCP and XINU

object@ibmpcug.co.uk (Ken Tough) (03/25/91)

We create applications for systems running a real-time operating
system very closely based on XINU.

We are now interested in "opening" up the systems, by linking to
networks using media such as Ethernet, and also by providing
X-Windows graphical interfaces (see following article).

For this, it seems TCP/IP is crucial. We have studied
"Internetworking with XINU" carefully, and would like to know if
anyone has fully implemented TCP for XINU. Is there an evolving
body of XINU-based TCP software somewhere?

Does anyone who has implemented TCP have any words of wisdom for
how long it would take to get a fast version up and running for our
real-time applications?

How big is the executable code? How much processing power would it
take (approximately, 16 bit 68000).

Thanks for your help,

Working with Doug Comer, I've done a version of TCP, and a full
Internet gateway for Xinu which is described in detail in the book
"Internetworking with TCP/IP, Volume II" by Douglas Comer and David L Stevens
available in April from Prentice-Hall.
Prentice-Hall will also be distributing the published version of the
source code in the near future.
In addition, a group of grad students here at Purdue has ported a
fully-functional X server to my version of TCP, but I'm not sure about its
availability at the moment.

To get a distribution price list and complete information on what
versions are available, you can send a request to:

	"xinu-librarian@cs.purdue.edu"

Updated lists are posted to "comp.os.xinu" periodlically too.
