[comp.sys.dec.micro] C compilers for Rainbow

mgb@macs.UUCP.UUCP (12/07/87)

Is there a C compiler of choice for the Rainbow ?

What if I'm interested in porting stuff to the Rainbow that I get from
  Comp.sources.* ?

How good is Mark Williams C+ ? Is it any better than the name implies
  (it's on sale)?

Pretty much any compiler works on the Rainbow, except maybe some of
those with an integrated prog. environment. What you miss is the bunch
of device-dependent library that comes with them.
On a IBM-compatible I'd say MSC v5.0 is definitely the compiler of
choice, however not being able to use the Codeview source debugger
it's only ordinary on a Rainbow. I think the best choice is Datalight
C. It's an excellent compiler (if you get it with the optimizer it
generates even better code than MSC v5), reasonably fast, and best of
all only around $100 (w/ optimizer) from Programmer's Connection
Borland claims that TurboPascal v4 runs on generic MS-DOS machines
using the correct switch. I'm interested to know how it, and other
integrated environments (TurboC,QuickC), fare on the Rainbow.
