For everyone who has an LN03, a Rainbow, and WordStar(tm): I have discovered how to EASILY make the LN03 bold characters correctly under WordStar. In Perspective, the DEC Micro newsletter, a plan was outlined which probably works, but deprives the user of two of the four programmable user-function keys. I was not willing to lose these keys, so I did a little experimenting. The result is surprisingly easy, but not terribly obvious: instead of using the LA100 driver as suggested by DEC, the LA50 driver is the correct choice. You should run WINSTALL on it and make the following changes: o select LA50 as the printer of choice from the printer menu. o turn FORM FEED on by default; this means you get one blank page put out at the start of each print, but it keeps the pagination correct. o edit the INITIALIZATION STRING to include the printer init sequence described in the LNO3 Programmer's Manual. This insures that the printer and fonts are reset before printing begins. It's either this or turning the printer off and on before printing to clear whatever fonts and/or print sizes selected by the last person/application using it. To make your favorite font the default, add that code in the init string also. o change the PRINTER NAME to say DEC LNO3 Laser Printer to avoid confusion with other printer types (this is optional; saves me plenty of headaches!!) That's all there is to it. If you have any questions, please let me know. Joel L. Seber Microcomputer Specialist D.W.
