I for one would sure appreciate getting my hands on a copy of SETRAM. Would you mind sending me a copy, Alan? [Sorry, my mailer doesn't like your net address and I can't hook up a modem in my office because of the fancy electronic phone system we have here at Penn.] I've been using ADJRAM, but that won't permit sizes below 64K and takes up about 30K as overhead. It, too, allows you to adjust the size of the ram disk. It's not a bad utility, mind you, but I'd still like to compare it to SETRAM. George

Would you mind sending me a copy, Alan? George! (And, EVERYONE else who sent me a mail message!) Your wish is my command. To one and all, enjoy! (Look past the .signature for the instructions and the UUENCODED archive.) Sorry that there's no documentation other than this note. The program works and works well. I have not noticed anything wierd or destructive about it. I have been using it for 2 years now under both DOS 2.11 and DOS 3.10. Edit this mail file and save the UUENCODED file to something like SETRAM.UUE. Use the Unix (tm) utility uudecode on the file and then download the resultant SETRAM.ARC file to your system using Kermit or XMODEM (or any other favorite file transfer protocol). Once the file is on your Rainbow (or PC-compatible) system, use PKXARC, ARCE, or ARC to extract the two 'crunched' files to your system book disk. Then... Edit your CONFIG.SYS file and include the following line: DEVICE=E:\SETRAM.SYS (or) DEVICE=A:\SETRAM.SYS (If you don't have a hard disk) (or wherever the path is for your utilities. I use the root for simplicity's sake.) Then, reboot your system. When the system is up, type the following example setup at the DOS prompt: A> SETRAM F 256 <CR> or A> SETRAM E 256 <CR> (If you do not have a hard disk.) You will now have a 256K RAMdisk located at drive F: (or E:). Change to the drive and run CHKDSK for a verification. Now, fire away! Load files. Run programs. Have fun! Then, to disable the RAMdisk, change to another drive (E: if you're using a hard disk, or A: if it's a floppy) and type: A> SETRAM F The RAMdisk is now disabled. SETRAM will allow the creation and destruction of RAMdisks from 8K to 800K without the need of rebooting your system. I hope you encounter no problems with this program. Some possible error messages from SETRAM: Message: error number 8(decimal) Explanation: not enough free RAM to create a RAMdisk of the requested size. Reenter a smaller RAMdisk size. Message: ramdisk already has memory Explanation: A RAMdisk is already installed. You can only have one RAMdisk installed at a time. If you have any questions, feel free to e-mail, USnail, or call me at any time (leave a message if I am out).
