According to common myth, Turbo Pascal under CP/M was designed on the DEC Rainbow! I have at least 4 different TPs for my machine floating around. Turbo V4.0 works just fine. There had been earlier posted comments that the "silent" switch was needed to keep messages from appearing. Nope. Works fine just by saying "tpc foo.pas". I have a strict IBM PC version that runs with no problems. All the utilities and compilers work with the exception of the integrated environment (turbo.exe), the TPUMOVER utility, and of course the TINST program. Of greatest concern is the TPUMOVER utility. I haven't gotten it to run under CodeBlue (no success with Turbo.Exe, either). But, TurboPower (I believe) has released a generic MS-DOS utility called TPINFO with (at the moment) just lists out the items in the .TPU units. Personally, I do not like the integrated environment (real programmers use the command line ;-) Besides, at another of my jobs, we all use Brief or Turbo V3.0 for its quick editor and then compile everything using 'tpc'. Bottom line: You have about $70? Get Turbo Pascal V4.0 and copy it onto Rainbow-readable floppies on the IBM PC (just FORMAT A:/1 on the PC - you'll get 180K floppies that the Rainbow can read with no problem. You'll need about 6 of these, though!). Rumor also has it that you can order TP4.0 from Borland directly on RX50 diskettes if you ask nicely enough. On another note, now that there is a real Pascal compiler on the market that works on the Rainbow, I hope to be releasing utilities and programs I've held off in the past since I didn't want to convert them to C or something silly like that. SOOO. If anyone is interested in any TOTALLY RAINBOW-SPECIFIC programs, let me know! Give me some encouragement! I haven't made tons of money from writing ShareWare programs, but at least I'd like to know if people are still interested in the effort. Also, post messages or send me an e-mail.... TOPIC OF DISCUSSION: What ShareWare-level programs would like to see for the Rainbow this year? You have a machine. It's a great tool. You plan on keeping it. What do you need?! There are dozens if not hundreds of Rainbow-programmers out there who would be more than willing to help out (myself included). DON'T LET THIS MACHINE DIE! Ok, off the soapbox for awhile... I'd like to answer to the invitation of Alan: > > Also, post messages or send me an e-mail.... TOPIC OF DISCUSSION: > What ShareWare-level programs would like to see for the Rainbow > this year? DON'T LET THIS MACHINE DIE! > Ok, off the soapbox for awhile... > From the start: 1. Do you, guys, use your Rainbow as a node in the net or only as a terminal linked to a stronger one? Are usenet links possible by a regular 100a and, if so, what is the use of Fido? 2. Is "freeware" or "Shareware" available thru usenet ? a) The software itself b) The list of available programs 3. Is there any other Rainbow free software accessible thru this network? Namely, C compiler Emacs (Gosling or Gnu) ? I only succeeded in getting a 64K version of multiplan on CPM; does it exist a larger free version of any screen calculator ? If anything please give VERY simple example of way to access. I don't understand sentences like "Uucoded archives are accessible on anonymous logging to uucp.net.somewhere" Thanks in advance for any help.
