[comp.sys.dec.micro] Rainbow on Usenet

campbell@maynard.BSW.COM (Larry Campbell) (04/28/88)

I guess it's been long enough since I posted about this that it's time
for yet another description of what a Rainbow running a Real Operating
System is like.

In article <276@mult.UUCP> lacroix@mult.UUCP (Daniel Lacroix) writes:
<> 1. Do you, guys, use your Rainbow as a node in the net or only as a
<> terminal linked to a stronger one? Are usenet links possible by a
<> regular 100a and, if so, what is the use of Fido?

My home Rainbow runs VENIX, a full-blown UNIX V7 system. This is real
UNIX, not a clone or workalike. The system has uucp links to 22 other
UNIX systems and processes an average of 110 megabytes of news and
mail every month (over one very busy 1200 baud phone line!). It is on
the Usenet, and is the mail gateway for our registered mail domain
"bsw.com". The full, Internet-style host name is "maynard.bsw.com".

The system has been up 24 hours a day (except for maintenance) for
over three years.

<> 2. Is "freeware" or "Shareware" available thru usenet ?
<> 	a) The software itself
<>	b) The list of available programs

Unfortunately, VENIX is far from free. The following things do come
with VENIX, but you first have to cough up the price of VENIX:

<> 3. Is there any other Rainbow free software accessible thru this network?
<>    Namely,
<>
<>    C compiler

Comes with VENIX. lint, too. And yacc and lex.

<> Emacs (Gosling or Gnu) ?

Jove (Jonathan's Own Version of EMACS) comes with VENIX/Rainbow. Jove
is really quite nice. You'll never cram Gnu EMACS onto a Rainbow, I
guarantee it.

<>    I only succeeded in getting a 64K version of multiplan on CPM;
<> does it exist a larger free version of any screen calculator ?

The public-domain spreadsheet "sc" works fine under VENIX.

Other VENIX goodies: _true_ multitasking, multiuser operating system;
Usenet software available free; basic interpreter; perpetual calendar;
encryption utility; graphics utilities (work on LA50 and on Rainbow
color graphics board); kermit; program execution profiler; etc. etc.

<> If anything please give VERY simple example of way to access.
<> I don't understand sentences like "Uucoded archives are accessible
<> on anonymous logging to uucp.net.somewhere"

Simple instructions: send $800.00 to The Boston Software Works, Inc.
Your kit will arrive within ten working days. (Sorry about the price,
but it's dictated by the developers of VENIX -- VenturCom, Inc.)
