[net.news.group] VMS news group...

gordon@scgvaxd.UUCP (07/01/83)

ommunity belonging can these networms achieve a parity in
status, so much deserved in the VAX world.

     Please help.

     Support a net.VMS newsgroup. (I also suggest a net.VMS.silly
group for all those who would like to spend their time arguing merits
of VMS vs. UNIX)

By the way, I am a VMS user and proud of it. I LIKE VMS, and I
LIKE USENET (and, for the record, many other UNIX utilities). I
selfishly want the best of both worlds.

VMS users (and others), let me know what you think of this.

Last time I subscribed to it (which I do not do now) fa.info-vax was
effectively a net.VMS

The question is: can we use fa.info-vax, or should we separate the usenet
traffic into a net. topic the way we do with others such as sf-lovers? With
the lack of reliability on the arpanet side of things since the cutover, I
would tend to vote for something like net.ifo-vax with the fa-material being
sent in through it when it comes through (expecially since fa.info-vax isn't
digestified).

I would prefer to see a net.vms, assuming there is interest out there.
fa.info-vax, when it exists and works, is for vax related issues,
usually also vms issues, but not necessarily.

Presumably, those interested in this have news readers that run
under VMS. I'm working with a EUNICE site, and would greatly
appreciate word of a EUNICE version of readnews if any such thing
exists. Please reply directly to me. (In case you're wondering, my
access to the net comes from a UNIX login at unc.) We already have
UUCP going, but the problem of porting readnews seems intractable.

As I understand it, the INTENTION of fa.info-vax is a VAX hardware or
operating-system independent newsgroup. The fact that it is being used as
a forum for VMS users should be significant of a need for a separate newsgroup
devoted to problems/discussions of VMS related issues.

Another problem is that many sites (mine, in particular) do not recieve
any or some of the arpanet group -- or the group may be "filtered" out someplace
upstream by a system that is not particularily interested in a particular group
(such as a purely UNIX site not wanting news on VMS)

Although the news at our site has been coming through sporadically, the mail
has been pretty steady. I have received a number of positive responses to
my inquiry re VMS newsgroup, especially for a group such as net.vms.flame
to debate UNIX vs. VMS issues which would "otherwise overwhelm the good stuff"
in the words of one respondant. I have also recieved some rather negative
responses... (presumably some synapses temporarily fused to anal cavities)
