[comp.sys.dec.micro] GIGI monitors

johnw@reed.UUCP (John B. Windberg) (07/20/88)

Greetings,
Does anyone have a monitor that would be compatable with an old GIGI?
You know, that big dusty box in the closet, the one you could pratically
give away to a wonderful student interested in using his GIGI to study
color graphics.

Thanks

Please email if you have any hints as to where I might look, The dec
1-800 sales number didn't help me. They had never heard of a GIGI.

   Hi John,

I tried e-mailing this but some mailer along the way from Rochester
to Portland coughed on my message. Let's hope a posting makes it.

I, too, have a GIGI in my closet (among other things). And, it is still
running (amazing) on a Barco 13" color monitor (even MORE amazing).
Every now and then I bring it out and hook it up to my Rainbow as a
   remote terminal.

Anyway, I suppose you're looking for a CHEAP solution. As you know, the
resolution of Rainbow and GIGI is close (800x240 vs. 767x240) and the
VR241 monitor from DEC works fine (in fact, most any RGB monitor will be
OK - and, if you can find a compatible RS-170 signal (I believe) composite
monitor, you can run that off a GIGI, too). Well, if you can find a cheap
VR241, you should be ok. If not, try giving IME (International Materials
Exchange, Inc.) a call at 1-617-497-2290 (located at 33 Agassiz Street,
Cambridge, MA, 02140). They were recently selling surplus Hitachi 13"
color monitors (the guts of a VR241 in a different case - Hitachi makes
   DEC's VR241 monitors) for $199.00. This monitor is a 640x240, 0.31
mask pitch monitor that reportedly works well for the DEC Rainbow.

Anyway, good luck. If you need help with the GIGI machine itself, I have
a small library of DEC GIGI documentation (GIGI VK100 Terminal Installa-
tion and Owner's Manual, GIGI Basic Manual, GIGI Exercisor User Guide,
   and the GIGI/ReGIS Handbook).

The GiGi's generally used a Barco monitor (model GD 33??).
All in all, they were a pretty good little terminal, for something
that DEC doesn't remember making... (if you really need to talk
to Dec about it, call it a VK100. That *may* help)

What I have done for our GIGI's is to tap in to the ttl levels for
R,G,B and sync then you can use any IBM compatible ttl monitor.
I'll send you an excerpt from the circuit diagram with the required
connections if you wish.

It is however quite simple, the GIGI outputs are "analog RGB" with sync on
Green, it is all done from ttl levels with the required resistive mixing.
