In reply to Rich's messages, no, turning MEDIACHK ON and then writing to a SS/DD PC floppy does not work on all Rainbows. However, I have used this reliably on **my** Rainbow for a couple of years to transfer files to/from an AT. One word of caution - NEVER erase files on the disk; instead, once the disk is full, reformat it on a PC. It seems that the Rainbow is capable of writing files OK to the SS/DD disk, but not erasing them. Perhaps ERASE (or DEL) does not first determine what type of floppy is being used. SEDT is available for the Rainbow. We have it here in our pd library. I don't know whether our copy is the most recent version, though, since it probably came from DEC MARLBORO, which shut down over a year ago. Anyway, if you have a modem, try calling some Rainbow oriented bbs's. Penn's Landing here in Philadelphia has a copy (version 3.1B). This board's at (215) 898-8511, 8N1, 24 hours a day, supporting XMODEM transfer. SEDT is located in the Rainbow files area, and is called SEDTV31B.ARC. It's about 162K. Another editor you might check out is microEMACS, which has a Rainbow-specific version. Multiple buffers, multiple windows, completely redefinable keys, macros, ... it's a truly great programmer's editor.
