[comp.sys.dec.micro] EDT on the Rainbow

link@stew.ssl.berkeley.edu (Richard Link) (08/20/88)

Has anyone been using SEDT (Super EDT) on the Rainbow? I don't know
if this is old hat or not, so ignore if appropriate.

SEDT is an enhanced version of EDT which runs on the Rainbow. There is
also a version for VMS. It allows simultaneous editing of 4 files in
separate buffers, with a separate cut&paste buffer. This allows a
cut&paste between files in the usual EDT manner. It also has programmable
macros & keys, automatic line wrap & paragraph reformat when editing text,
executing operating system commands from within the editor, etc.

The *NICE* thing is, it uses the Rainbow function and <Help, Select, Do, etc>
keys. The Help key at top menu level gives the key mappings a la VT100;
subsequent screens appear for each command. How's that for a micro editor?

The best thing is (and I really can't figure this one out), it is available
FREE from DEC. Or at least it used to be available for download from DEC
headquarters in Maynard. I have not been able to get through in the last
year or so. Perhaps it is still available from DECUS.

Anyone having this info should please post.

I use a UNIX system (BSD, what else here in Berkeley?) with vi.
I find it MUCH easier to perform editing of LARGE files by downloading
from the SUN to my Rainbow (with hard disk) and using SEDT.

In terms of ease of use, features, and multiple file editing capabilites,
SEDT has much to recommend it. One problem I was working on much of this
week was merging several reference lists for a publication.

The cut&paste from multiple files, without having to worry about line
numbers, is very nice. Just move the cursor and go!

SEDT is available from The Hitchikers Guide to the Galexy, A FIDO net BBS
(315) 589-7361 (running on a souped up RB-100 with 67 MB disk)
This board is dedicated to the Rainbow,
there is some PC stuf there and a VAX-VMS file area also.
The board is operated by Fritz Howard, an active DECUS member.

The file name is: SEDT219.ARC MS-DOS SEDT version 3.3 level 219.
It is located in the the WORD PROCESSING FILES AREA #7.

also of interest in this area are:
DED206.ARC- Multi-window editor V2.06
MEMACS.ARC-Micro EMACS editor for MS-DOS
REMACS.ARC-Rainbow EMACS MS-DOS and CP/M versions.
TECO.ARC-TECO type editor for MS-DOS

I saw a posting on a BBS with the following info on SEDT:

SEDT V3.3 level 223 is available from the WayStar BBS
(508)-481-7147
Downloars are restricted during the hours of 6 pm-12 pm.

I have not verified the above information or contacted this BBS.
