rl1b+@ANDREW.CMU.EDU ("Robert A. Locke") (09/15/88)
OK. Time to rethink this one. The reason I am trying to avoid postings over the net is because of the diffculties it will probably cause when people decide to do repostings, etc. Also, many mailers are going to choke on the large size of most of these postings. There are two ways to handle this. Have the files available for anonymous ftp at a central location and for those that cannot ftp, have a request line so that they will be mailed to the person directly. Currently, people can ftp to unix[1-8].andrew.cmu.edu, login as anonymous and switch directories to: /afs/andrew/usr/rl1b/infodec/library That directory will contain the binaries mentioned in postings. I'm working on making it more complete and then putting together a README index. The request line to have me mail it to you is to send your request to info-dec-micro-request@andrew.cmu.edu. Same place the subscription stuff goes. Also, as a side note, the directory /afs/andrew/usr/rl1b/infodec/archives will contain the archives. They are fairly big. Currently there is last November through March done. I'm almost caught up. :-) The second way to handle this is to have folks do their postings broadly to the net and then I'll grab the stuff and put it in that directory for people to get at later. Overall, this might be the best way to handle it. Then if one part did not come out right, you can send in a request for that part to info-dec-micro-request and I'll ship it to you. This list is for you folks so I'm willing to put this up for a vote. (Don't want to look like a dictator...) The advantage to the first one is that those folks who don't want the postings won't have their mailboxes flooded with huge archives. The advantage to the second is that the archives will get to you probably about 24 hours faster (the amount of time it takes me to strip the archive and get it into the library). Requests should be filled also within 24 hours (except on weekends of course when who knows where I'll be). Well, let me know how you feel by sending to one of the below addresses or broadly to the net if you want to try to influence opinion. (Erik, how did your Sedt get so small? Mine is 350K of arc files for both the executable and documentation. Are you sure yours is OK?) --Rob Locke List Maintainer ------- Arpanet: rl1b+@andrew.cmu.edu Bitnet : RALII@DRYCAS Fidonet: Rob Locke (1:129/15) USNail : 5419 Normlee Place Pittsburgh, PA 15217 USA
