[comp.sys.dec.micro] One more time - File Postings

rl1b+@ANDREW.CMU.EDU ("Robert A. Locke") (10/14/88)

Hi all.

Hopefully this is the last time that I will have to go through this
posting of files to the net. It's becoming a real headache.

Here's the final tally:
12 Yes (post to the whole net)
8 No (ftp access and file request only)

Now granted that this is only 20 out of well over a hundred subscribers,
but the no people have some very valid points. Now for those of you who
have been very vocal in saying that perhaps these people are on the wrong
list, let me remind you of the purpose of this list. This list is here
for the sharing of knowledge about DEC Micro's and if someone has a
question, then they come to this list for help. We are the last stop for
many people when DEC has forsaken them. We are basically a support group.
Now my feeling is then that should 12 people (well, make it 13 if you
include me) subject the rest of the list to a policy that is clearly not
beneficial to the entire list? I think not.

Therefore, here is my proposal. Within the next week, I will set-up an
additional Info list called Info-DEC-Micro-Files. It is to this list that
those who desire the general postings may subscribe. What I would like to
do is also set up a parallel comp.sys.dec.micro.files newsgroup on Netnews
but I understand that it is a long drawn out process that takes over a
month. So I am not going to subject the Internet and Bitnet people to
that wait. If you are on Usenet, I can set you up with a direct mailing
of the stuff on the new list until I can get the newsgroup.

Now for those who do not subscribe to this new list, there will still be
ftp access to the files on Drycas.

         ftp drycas.club.cc.cmu.edu
         login anonymous
         CD [ANONYMOUS.INFO-DEC-MICRO.FILES] (for .ARC files)
         CD [ANONYMOUS.INFO-DEC-MICRO.ARCHIVES] (for message archives)

The [.FILES] directory must be used with FILE TYPE set to Image or Binary.
The [.ARCHIVES] directory is Ascii based. I will probably change the
[.FILES] to contain the UUencoded versions so that people can use Ascii
transmission. There are currently no README type files in the directories
but I should hopefully have them done this weekend some time.

Well, I have babbled long enough. If people have any violent reactions to
what I have said, fell free to turn on the flames and do it to it. Send
me mail at one of the below addresses or you can start another debate over
the net if you like.
