[comp.sys.dec.micro] DEC PRO serial ports

dorian@eddie.MIT.EDU (Dorian Garson) (10/17/88)

Has anyone managed to run a terminal off of the printer port of a DEC PRO 350
running Venix 1.0? Can it be done?

Hi! In a very bad answer to your question >> it CAN be done, but I
CANT remember how.. For some reason, my mind remembers stats and
such only if Im looking at/working on the machiene Im talking about...
and my pro is at home.

I remember making the hookup with Venix v1 (and I think the procedure for
setting it up with Venix v2 is very different) A slightly complicated mess
of null modem cables etc... And an old atari running a term emulator.
I don't think I ever got it up and running on a modem. Of cource, your
best bet is the com1 port, but you probably know that (Youre probably
trying to get around the 2 user limit, no? ;-) )
Speaking of which...Now that pro's are going outta mind and style, and
venturecom LONG ago stopped supporting its Venix implementation, (not
to speak of ver1, which was NEVER supported..) Does that mean that
its COMPLETELY legal to try and vamp your 2 user licience up to more
users??? Was it ever illegal? I have a 2 user licience, and an option
is to buy a 2-8 user licience. (I assume this is just software...)
Otherwise I think it just limits the number of shells on different ports.
Anyone have ANY information on this stuff??????
If its legal, does anyone have the software, or know where I can get it?
(Even if it's not... anyone have any suggestions on how to hack it?)

(Dorian >> During real time in the real world I live in Boston and work
at the media-lab on ames street... If you like, please send mail to
lurker@amt.mit.edu and when I get back for a vacation we can work a
little on vamping our Pros... since support is going to dissapear, Id
like to get mine up to optimum crunch before then.)

Dont you know youll stain the carpet?)
