[comp.sys.dec.micro] A List Maintainer's Ramblings

rl1b+@ANDREW.CMU.EDU ("Robert A. Locke") (11/18/88)

To all you faithful subscribers,

Here is the scoop on the duplicates problem that was occuring the last few weeks.

> A file system bug that wasn't holding flock()s for very long has apparently
> been fixed (in the file server code). The bug had been in place for quite a
> while, but the time for which the locks were being held (in the file servers)
> shortened from 30 minutes to 5 minutes about 3-4 weeks ago.

> A consequence of this bug was that duplicate copies were often sent of
> messages addressed to large distribution lists. A consequence of the fix is
> that these gratuitous duplicates should now be occurring far less frequently.

> The bug fix should have other pleasant consequences for the message system as
> well. For example, it should be that much more difficult for the
> master-update files to become corrupted.
Now, if any of you are still experiencing duplicate copies of messages posted to
this list, please forward both copies of the messages (with Received headers
intact) and I will look through them and attempt to find out why you are
receiving said duplicates. You can forward them to any of the below addresses
or you can send them to Info-DEC-Micro-Request@andrew.cmu.edu.

Also, sorry for the delay in the announcement of Info-DEC-Micro-Files. But, I
promise, this weekend you will see something. (My girlfriend's going away for
the weekend so I'll have nothing better to do with my "free time".)
