[comp.sys.dec.micro] DEC Micro History

Rbaker@AFMPC-1.ARPA (02/27/89)

Ok, I'm a novice (rookie, virgin, etc) in the DEC micro world. I have lotsa
micro & mainframe experience (lately not sure which is which) & can understand
a fairly technical summary.

Here's my query - Can anyone, in a single message, sort out all the various
DEC micros by CPUs, available OS's, and DEC brand names for me? I'm looking
for a bunch of entries like the following...

DecMate II CPU is CMOS version PDP-8 12-Bit word size
             OS was COS-99
             Current prices unknown.
             1 RS-232 serial port.
             128K 12-Bit memory

 ...and so forth.

Specifically, I'd like to get the "low down" on the following:
DecMates I, II
VaxMates
DecStation
VaxStation
Professional 300, 325, 350

I know this will be a labor of love for someone. Like many of you, I'm a
systems junkie and I have to explore every possiblity for a new systems high.

Here is what I've found so far...

Rainbow 100 Dual CPUs Z80/8088 8-bit word size
Available OS were MS-DOS (not PC-Compatible)
                                CPM-86
Current prices about $500 for base CPU, but varies
2 RS-232 serial ports (one labeled printer)
64K from factory, expandable to 256K

DECmate II DEC 6120 (PDP-8 CMOS version)
Available OS were WPS-8, COS 310, CP/M (with added Z-80 processor)
              Current prices unknown
              2 RS-232 serial ports
              64 KWord (96 bytes)

Dec Professional
              DEC F11 (PDP 11/23)
Available OS were POS, CP/M (with added Z-80 processor), VENIX
Current prices $350 for base unit from DEC
              2 RS-232 serial ports
512K, expandable in 256K increments (what is maximum?)

Ok, guys, let me hear you...

Thanks!
