[comp.sys.dec.micro] info-dec-micro-FILES

I was very glad to see the announcement on Info-dec-micro-FILES.
Two remarks:

(1) How does one request files by MAIL ? Is there an automatic
server ? What is the syntax of the commands ?

(2) I see that everything is ZIP'ed. There is one disadvantage to
ZIP vs. ARC : There are no ZIP programs on the mainframe. I
prefer to unpack everything on the mainframe first, and then
download to the Rainbow only what is needed. Digests, for
example, remain on the mainframe. The ZIP format will
require me to transfer them to the Rainbow, unzip, arc, transfer to
to the mainframe, and unarc! So I suggest using (PK)ARC
compression until there are more ZIP implementations available.

Sergiu,

For your first question, there is no special syntax for submitting
requests via mail. Currently I am doing it all by hand (mostly). I
do have a script which I pass a filename and address to and it ships
the file uuencoded. So don't worry about your syntax.

As to your second comment concerning whether or not to use PKZip.
Most of the Arc utilities around that I have seen for mainframes are
at least one version behind sometimes even two. I don't plan on using
PKArc from the old v2 days (besides, I don't even have one). Also,
space is a consideration for me. Now I know that LHArc from Japan
does have the best compression available but I can rely on PKZip
because I trust Phil Katz. I don't know the Japanese people from a
whole in the ground. I also can be sure that all versions of PKZip
will work on the Rainbow. I cannot guarantee that for LHArc. This is
the reason I chose PKZip. Besides, the VMS version should be out soon
and he does have quite a bit of documentation that could be used to
write one for your favorite mainframe. :-)
