[comp.sys.dec.micro] Rainbow hard drive

cjohnson@usceast.UUCP (Carnegie &) (10/24/89)

Hi all,

This is my first time posting to the net so I hope I don't
screw it up too bad.

I have a question about hard drives for the Rainbow. I just
recently bought a 'Bow at a surplus sale and I am looking
to save wear-n-tare on the floppies by installing a hard drive.
My question is: what is the best drive for the 'Bow (other than
DEC's drive as I am a college student without mucho bucks)?
Will the 'Bow handle drives larger than 10meg? How much will
this hard drive upgrade cost me?

I have been reading this newsgroup for a couple of weeks now and
I am really glad to see others still using the Rainbow. I wish
that there was a FidoNet board in my area that carries the Rainbow
echomail so that I don't have to wait for the summaries put up here,
but thanks to whomever is doing it.

You can send replies to me directly or you can post'em here as I
read this newsgropu regularly.

Installing a hard disk in your Rainbow might be an expensive
proposition. Although any ST205 or ST225 hard disk will work in a
Rainbow, you *will* need a DEC or DEC-compatible hard disk
controller (~$300 used or $365 new from Suitable Solutions).
The June 1988 issue of _Rainbow News_ contained an article by Jerry
Miller of Suitable Solutions listing which hard disks have been
shown to work in a Rainbow. (Suitable Solutions can be reached at
1-408-727-9090; back issues of _Rainbow News_ can be ordered from
Caroline Mack by calling 1-618-632-1143.)

**** Late breaking news **** The Sept '89 issue of RN arrived
today; there's an ad for a (presumably used) 20MB hard disk *and*
controller card for $395. Eustace Enterprises is doing the selling,
and they can be reached at 1-407-433-0846. Carney, this is probably
as cheap as you'll find for a hard disk upgrade.

As for the Fido Echomail, I post the messages here the same day
I get them from a local bbs (SATALINK bbs, 1-215-364-3324). Barring
troubles with that board or mistakes on my part, messages are gatewayed
each day. It also looks like our messages will soon be posted to
Compuserve's DECPC forum.

George
