Joe (and other interested readers of IDM/csdm), There apparently is a gateway between the Internet and FidoNet for private mail. Your mailer will need to understand domain-style addressing, though. I suggest this method be used for messages not of general interest to readers of INFO-DEC-MICRO/comp.sys.dec.micro such as flames and buying/selling used equipment. What you'll need is the address of the person on FidoNet, which can be found by examining the origin line of one of that person's messages as it appears in a Rainbow EchoMail Digest. For instance, David Strickler moderates the Rainbow Echo on FidoNet. His origin line lists an address of (1:101/45). To send him a private message from BITNET/Internet/UUCP you would use the address: David.Strickler@f45.n101.z1.fidonet.org Now I don't want to single David Strickler out; I'm just using this as an example. Please don't flood him with mail saying "This is a test; please reply". Also keep in mind, as in all electronic communications, that someone, somewhere, is paying the bills. This is especially true of FidoNet which is composed entirely of personal computer users. Please don't abuse this service. NB: I have learned about this only yesterday. I sent off one message as a test and have received neither a bounce nor a reply. I wonder whether that's a good sign??? Lastly, I have *no* idea how users on FidoNet can reply privately - that'll be up to them to figure out. (You could always pass along your phone number and tell the person on FidoNet to give you a call.) I'll be sure to keep you posted as I learn what works and what doesn't.
