[comp.sys.dec.micro] Rainbow 100A monochrome monitor problem

uahfxg01@ASNUAH.ASN.NET ("FRANK GOSSETT") (03/08/90)

I have a Rainbow 100A monitor problem (I think). Input from anyone
would be greatly appreciated.

When the system is powered on everything seems to check out, except the
monitor will not work (no display). All of my error lights on the system
board are off and it seems to respond correctly to keyboard sequences
(e.g. dir, chkdsk, etc...) as far as I can tell without a screen. Does
this seem like a monitor replacement situation? Are there any workable
alternatives besides the $195 swap-out with DEC? Again, any info at all
would be greatly appreciated. Thanks,

Frank Gossett

P.S. I've disconnected and re-connected the monitor cables just to
see if it may be corrosion related...no luck.

You have of course tried turning up the brightness and contrast controls
on the rear of the unit, no? There are also some pots inside, one
of which (don't know which it is) can be tweaked to turn up the brightness.

If that fails, your best course is to buy a new one from DEC. They
are currently on sale @ $75 for white phosphor and $100 for green or
amber.

In the past, I've seen a lot of problems with DEC monitors,
particularly with VT1XX's, but also with my Rainbows. I havn't had the
time to track down the Rainbow problem, but more often than not the problem
with the VT1XX's were the high-voltage power supply and/or the flyback coil.
(The latter is part of the power supply). You might be able to take it to
a TV or computer repair place and have the work done at a much lower cost
that taking it to DEC.

A few months ago I had a problem with my monitor - the display became
unstable and distorted.

A technician in my lab tracked it down - it was fixed by adjusting an
internal pot.

Last week the monitor finally died. I don't think it's anything too
serious, so I'll take it to a repair shop to get
it checked out.
