[comp.sys.dec.micro] how to get to 22 bit.

UA_HACKS%EVAX2@ARIZONA.BITNET (Hardware And Computer Knowledge Society) (03/24/90)

After much book scrounging I have more questions about pdp's.

First off though I wanted to mention that the current system was a gift and we
can't afford to buy much, in fact just about everything has been donated.

We have:
 a ba11 Ne type unit
a LSI 11/23 cpu w/ Floating point and MMU
 and a 9X9 11/03l backplane. the connections a soldered.

From what I have read the cpu should handle 22 bit, but the backplane won't.
It has been suggested that I wirewrap (hard from soldering), is that my only
approach? How about chaining backplanes? because I can't change the current
backplane I only have 9 slots to use, can I slide around this?
Also someone said that to attempt to redo the cd side of the backplane
from (ABCD to ABAB) often has power problems. what if I chained 2 units and
made them both 22 bit by rewrap?

The reason I need so many slots is that I have 10) 32k cards, 2) 4 line muxs
and 1 drive card (2 RL02's, I would like add a second drive card
(going to 5+drives) and Decnet to a series of vax 11/750's.

While I am lending your ear :-) ...

Does anybody know the pros and cons of rsx11m V4.2 (or 4.0 or 4.1)? to Unix V7?

other problems:
I can't seem to get rsx up full tilt, Dcl commands are not in the system
i.e. directory. I get a task not installed but I can't find anything refering
to installing these tasks.

And finally what kind of software can I get out there on this system?
Where can I find it? either RSX or UNIX.

Thanks,
