[comp.sys.dec.micro] Rainbow Monitor died

link@stew.ssl.berkeley.edu (Richard Link) (06/03/90)

My Rainbow monitor (amber) died. It had previously shown some problems
(flickering, distortion, rapid bouncing, etc) which were cured for a
while by one of my techs adjusting an internal trim pot (second from front,
I believe, on the LHS).

My question: what should I do now? :

(1) get it repaired

(2) buy a new monitor

(3) forget it and junk the Rainbow.

My system is a 100+ (896K, graphics board, 8087, 10Mb HD) and you can bet
I paid *plenty* for it when it first came out.
However, I don't know if I want to sink even another $100 into this
obsolete machine, given the fact that I also have a Zenith PC clone
(but with no HD).

The original monitor on my Rainbow burned out during the first 2 weeks.
A month before by 1-year warranty was due to expire, my motherboard was
replaced (twice), as well as the power supply and disk controller.

In all fairness, DEC provided excellent service. Not only did they
do on-site repairs, but when I sent a letter of complaint to corporate
headquarters (Canada) advising them that "the only colour in my Rainbow
is lemon yellow", they sent a service rep with a completely new system
unit to replace my machine.

Any suggestions will be appreciated.
