I recently purchased a QUBIE 1200 baud modem (plug-in card type) for my LEADING EDGE PC. I constantly get extraneous characters on my screen. Sometimes the garbage appears more frequently than others. Are the QUBIE modems known for poor noise reduction, or do I have an exceptionally noisy phone line? Other users at my site have complained about some noise on our 1200 baud lines, but it seems that I am getting more than my share. I used to use a 300 baud modem and never had this sort of trouble. Any insight will be greatly appreciated. Please mail responses. Thanks in advance! -- ----- Mark D. I also have one which produces lots of garbage. I sent it back and when it came back they said nothing was wrong. It works fine at 300 BAUD, but at 1200 seems to pick up more chars. I find that none of the bad chars are transmitted to the host. I just don't use the modem side of it. To much trouble. I also tried a Qubie modem, and had severe noise problems at 1200 baud on incoming data. It cost $304, and when my local Businessland had a special on Microcom ERA2 modems for $329, I sent the Qubue back. (The Qubie also played the radio over the speaker while dialing -- strange.) The Microcom works like a charm, and has a really spiffy terminal program which emulates VT100, VT52, and IBM 3101, as well as implementing Microcom's MNP protocol which is supported by Telenet among others for error-free terminal sessions. You can also set up very complex function keys to wait until a given time, then dial the phone, look for character strings, send and receive files with or without MNP error correction, and so forth. I like it. My only complaint is that the Microcom modem is very fat and wants to take up two slots in my XT. Works OK sandwiched next to the floppy controller, though. John Levine, ima!johnl

Sometimes the VADIC which we use at 1200 will generate spurious characters on some phone connections. I would guess that there is crosstalk which the modem interprets as characters. The solution has been to re-make the telephone connection, hoping to get either a quieter line or modem on the other end.

Some of us using acoustic coupled Racal/Vadic 1200 Baud over commercial long distance seem to find that problem also. I believe, in my case, that it is crosstalk in the telephone systems, in that some of the trunks in my case have other R/v and Bell modems on them. The crosstalk looks like extraneous characters to the modem. The only remedy, in my case is to re-dial and attempt to get a cleaner trunk.
