[comp.sys.dec.micro] Rainbow Windows 3.0

I spoke to Len Berk (of Leonard Berk Consulting, Toronto) yesterday. He plans
currently to release the Rainbow Adaptation Kit for Windows 3.0 two weeks from
now, on August 20. He will be mailing all registered users of RAK V2.11 at
that time. I believe the upgrade price is $50, but I'm not sure of the
first-time price. You'll need, in addition, Windows 3.0 on 360k disks, since
Len's product modifies, but does not provide, Windows itself. I got Windows
3.0 from Egghead Software, and then had to call Microsoft to get the 360k disks
(I've only seen the 1.2Mb 5.25" and the 720k 3.5" disks in the stores). They
(MS) were reasonably fast, and shipped the 360k disks via FedEx within a couple
of days.

You'll need an Idrive to install from 360k disks (or a friend with an AT and an
RX50 driver for his 1.2Mb drive to copy the 360k disks to RX50 disks); 896k of
memory (even a regular PC needs more than 640k to run most Windows 3.0 apps);
and Code Blue, to allow you to run the Microsoft-supplied SETUP program for
Windows. As before, you'll die of boredom waiting for Windows to catch up if
you don't have a Turbow 286 board. I hope I haven't left anything out. (Of
course, Windows is not much fun unless you get a mouse, although the guidelines
say that developers should strive to make WinApps usable without one).

Len claims that Win 3.0 is about the same size as Win 2.11 when loaded into
memory, so you should have about the same amount of memory left as before. It's
still only monochrome, however, but that turns out to look pretty good anyway.
(So I'm told - I've only seen 2.11 on the Rainbow, and that's perfectly
acceptable).

I hope to have my copy before the end of August. I'll post my experiences to
the net at that point, if there appears to be interest.
