[net.micro] floppy bargain?

hugh@hcrvx1.UUCP (Hugh Redelmeier) (01/22/85)

In this month's BYTE, two dealers are offering Remex double-sided,
double-density, 2/3 height, 5.25 inch floppy-disk drives cheap:
- California Digital (pg449) $39
- Priority One Electronics (pg362) $59 for one, $49 each for 2-9

Both say brand new, in factory carton.
P1 says tested up to 2mS track-to-track.
CD says (in pg448 fine print) the model is RFD480.

What are the gotchas? Here are my concerns:
- I guess Remex must be going/gone out of the business
	- spare parts, service might be difficult (so
	  buy an extra drive??)
	- their product might be inferior, causing their demise
- the drives may not come aligned (not, for me, an insurmountable
  problem)
- how does one put a 2/3 height drive in a full-height hole?
(I have a Kaypro II (single-sided drives) that I am itching
to upgrade; I have a friend with an OLD IBM PC that still
  has single-sided drives)
- are these things plug-compatible with Tandon tm100-2 drives?
	- signals, plugs, jumpers, power, speed, 40 Cylinders
- maybe they are all gone already

Does anyone out there have any more answers (or questions)?
Mail to me; if warranted, I will post a summary.
