A copy of IMPDRIVE 1.0 will be placed on solbourne.solbourne.com in pub/rb/impdrv10.zip for anonymous FTP access. It isn't there as I post this, but it will be there before Saturday morning. I've included impdrive.doc at the end of this article. Please forgive me for this long delay. Things have been a zoo around here. Warner Losh imp@Solbourne.COM --------------- impdrive.doc ------------------------ IMPDRIVE is Copyright (c) 1991 by M. Warner Losh. See the file COPYING for the copyright on this program and terms and conditions of its use and distribution. IMPDRIVE REQUIRES DOS 3.10b to run. If you don't have 3.10b, then you will not be able to run IMPDRIVE. You will also need a PC compatable 720K 3.5" floppy (unfortunately, the 1.44M drives don't work with the Rainbow) with a straight through 34 pin cable. Here is a quick list of what to do to use this driver: 1) unpack the zip file (you should have already done this) 2) copy impdrive.sys into the place where you normally keep device drivers (or in e:\ if no other place comes to mind) 3) add the following line to the config.sys: DEVICE=E:\impdrive.sys c: where e:\ is the path where you have the driver c: is the physical location of the drive (usually c or d) 4) Reboot your system. Your new drive will come up as the next letter after your last hard disk partion. SOME NOTES: Right now it only understands low density, 80 track 3.5" floppy drives. While there is commented out code in the driver to handle other formats dynamically, it doesn't work and won't be working for a while. Let me know what you think and what is missing. I'm planning to add some stuff to the driver, but would love your feedback. One of the things planned is a special format program that will format 9 sector (both soft and hard (initilizing) formatting). Also planned is support for other disk drives (notablely the 800K Teacs, plus PC low density disks). Again, input here would be welcome. Please see the TROUBLE file for help troubleshooting your installation. Only understands 3.5" disk drives. No format program available. Runs only on DOS 3.10b (won't work on earlier versions, even if they are numbered 3.10!!!) First access can be much slower than I-DRIVE, but subsequent accesss are just as fast. Can't boot off of a 3.5" drive. Requires Turbo C++ 1.0. Other versions of TCC may or may not work. Other compilers may or may not work. There will be one warning. Please register your copy of this program. Registration charge is $8.00. If you want to get a disk from me, please add $2.00 for postage and handling (total $10.00). Registration entitles you to phone support (if you call me) and notices of new versions. Registration also helps fund future development of this program.
