I have two questions about the IBM PS/2 model 55sx computer, which is IBM's entry level '386 machine. 1: What type of math coprocessor does it take? Can I use an 80287 or 80387? What about the 80387SX? Is the 80387SX available, is it currently shipping, and how much does it cost? 2: Is there a big backlog of orders for the processor unit itself? Everything I read indicates that Intel is having a lot of trouble keeping up with demand for the 80386SX chip. Does this result in a six month wait when it comes to ordering one of these PC's? Has anyone at PSU ordered one through the microcomputer order center, and if so, has it come in yet? Actually, I guess that I had more than two questions, after all. If anyone has any info, I'd certainly appreciate some feedback. Our department is considering ordering a bunch of new PC's. My gut feeling is that the 55SX may just barely be worth the extra $350 or so when compared to the model 50Z, but not if it requires a much more expensive coprocessor, and certainly not if it takes an extra 6 months to get hold of one. Any comments? ********************************************************************* Pennsylvania State University, Applied Research Laboratory *********************************************************************

The Math Co-Processor for the IBM 55SX is the Intel 80386/80387SX, IBM part number 27F4676 (feature code #4676). It is currently shipping with a six to eight week backlog (not uncommon for a new feature). The price for this part through the Micro Order Center is $477 when purchased with a system and $795 when purchased separately. The 55SX, like the co-processor, is running on a six to eight week backlog. The MOC has placed orders for this unit. Of the units we've ordered, we received three just last week, one from a 6/15 order, one from a 6/20 order and one from a 7/19 order. We were told last week that the IBM dock now has some SX's in stock and delivery times should improve dramatically. In any event, it is highly unlikely that it will take 6 months for a 55SX to be delivered. One note, the MOC orders and receives equipment from a different dock than the local IBM. This means that departmental orders, which are placed directly through IBM are subject to different stock and delivery schedules. If you are placing a departmental order, your best information for delivery times is Tim Wilkinson with IBM (237-5721).
