[comp.sys.ibm.pc.rt] Ether Net for an RT

kalra@cit-vax.Caltech.Edu (Devendra Kalra) (11/14/87)

I have a desk top model RTPC and I would like
to connect it to the ether net on campus. I
have also have a 3COM ethernet card.

Does any one out there have any software to
drive the card. Specifically ftp, telnet etc.

Thanks
Devendra

I forgot to mention that I am using AIX 2.1.2

I'm not sure about this, but the RT has what they call "Distributed Services"
that they ship with their Ethernet product. It includes *all* the software
needed from the kernel level on up.

We were supposed to receive the Ethernet hw/sw and install it on our customer's
equipment, but the order got mangled and we had to send out the units before
checking the installation.

If you have the IBM manuals (all 12-15 of them!), the one you can look in for
info is "Managing the AIX" and "Communications on the AIX". The "managing"
volume is the standard blue color and contains info on the user level interface
to Ethernet software. (Included is something called 'netmail'...) And the
"Communications" volume is green and contains the set-up/installation info-
rmation for the net. In one of these is how to use the 'INnet' for transfer
using ftp, internet, arpa, etc. protocols. I'll attempt to isolate the
particular sections and re-post that stuff later.

Up to the point of the user-level software, the installation is alot like
the installation of a uucp direct link.

If you don't have the DS package mentioned above, things are gonna' be a little
more difficult. I'll find out what I can about that, too.

In the mean time, what other computers are you trying to link up with? And
what is the hardware on their end?

There is a TCP/IP software product for the RT/PC under AIX. I don't have
any of the documentation with me anymore, but seems to me you needed to
have the IBM Baseband Adapter for Ethernet access. This looked to be a
Ungermann-Bass manufactured board, but I don't know if it identical to
the PC-NIC card. The TCP/IP product might also support the RT TRN
interface, but I never looked at that closely. As far as getting it to
work with the 3com card you would have to deal with a device driver to
both the VRM and AIX and the write your own code to the driver.

I may be out of date. I have not played with the RT much for almost a
year and most of that was with the ACIS 4.2bsd port.

To correct some previous postings --

TCP/IP support is included with the standard distribution of the AIX
Operating System. This includes all you need to get on an Ethernet except the
RT PC Baseband Adapter (and cable and transceiver, which IBM does not sell).
Protocols supported include SMTP, FINGER, RLOGIN (TELNET), FTP, TFTP and
others. I don't know what the 3COM adapter is, or if it will work with the RT.
If you can provide more information, I will try to help.

Distributed Services is a separate offering and is NOT part of the standard
AIX distribution. Distributed Services is a SNA/LU 6.2 based protocol to
provide a distributed file system (a la NFS (tm)) and other functions.
Distributed Services will run over a variety of media including Ethernet,
SDLC and Token Ring networks.

TCP/IP support is also included with the ACIS 4.3 Operating System availble
from IBM for academic accounts.

Thanks for all the information I have received about
PC-RT ethernet.

Most of the answeres applicable to be ( that is on AIX)
seem to be: I already have the software if I am using
the IBM base band adapter card.

However I have a 3COM card. It is an ethernet card made
by 3COM corporation for PCs. It works just fine on
XT's or AT's. I do not have a base band adapter card,
at least not yet. Hence need for software to run networking
on this 3COM beast.

Another Query:
AIX comes with a program ate (async
terminal adapter) that uses /dev/tty0 (or any tty line)
to talk to a modem or a any asynch host. I have
connected an AT serial/parallel card as /dev/tty0 and
am using to connect to a department host through a
RS232 line. However when ate is invoked from an X-Window
window, it hangs.

I am running AIX 2.1.2 and it does not seem to have
tip or cu. has any one solved the problem of
running a terminal emulator on a serial line
from X-Windows.

Thanks
