System: RT/PC with AIX version 2.1.2 The RT cartridge tape is able to read either QIC-11 or QIC-24 tapes, both using /dev/rmt0. This is no small achievement; I know of very few other systems that can read both, and all the ones I know of at least require you to use different device names (thus different major and/or minor numbers) for the two different formats. The RT seems to check the first block on the tape, and figures out for itself what kind of tape it is reading. However, I have not been able to figure out how to write a QIC-11 tape. The default is apparently QIC-24, and I can't find any way to change or override that. The manual(s) (User Reference, Technical Reference) are very quiet about this. In fact, they don't even mention that it can read either format. I've tried lots of different minor numbers, still with major number 10, with no luck. I'm not brave or foolish enough to blindly try different major numbers. Has anyone else discovered how to write QIC-11 tapes? jw
