[comp.sys.ibm.pc.rt] why no text on my screen?

paul@vixie.UUCP (Paul Vixie Esq) (03/08/88)

I have a PC RT sitting in my office, and I can't seem to get it to work.
There is a cursor on the screen but no text. The cursor jumps around as it
would when drawing text; I can watch phantom bootup messages not appear, then
I can see a login: prompt not appear, then a shell prompt if I log in as root,
then I can shut the system down, answer the "are you sure you want to do this"
prompt, and watch the cursor eventually come to rest and fail to respond to
further keyboard input.

All very nice, but I'd like to see the text, too. Before I call IBM field
service, I thought I'd check with this group to see if it's RTFM (I have a
five foot stack of M which I have not yet R and would rather not).

The display is an "IBM 6153", a small (12-inch?) black-and-white. At least
the cursor is white and the rest of the screen is black. I don't know what
display card is in there, since I havn't pulled it out (yet). Does IBM gear
respond well to flexing and reseating boards in times of odd behaviour?

Does anyone have any ideas about what's causing this? Ought I call IBMFS?
