[comp.sys.ibm.pc.rt] data base products for AIX; AT simulator

(I originally sent this to the info-ibmrt mailing list. Apparently postings
to comp.sys.ibm.pc.rt automatically get forwarded to the mailing list, but
not vice-versa?)

There are versions of INFORMIX, INGRES and ORACLE available for AIX/RT.
There are probably others that I am not aware of.

I'm appending excerpts from the announcement letter below.

TITLE IBM AIX (TM)/RT (TM) PERSONAL COMPUTER AT (R) SIMULATOR
ABSTRACT The IBM AIX/RT Personal Computer AT (R) Simulator licensed
program is designed to provide support for execution of many IBM
Personal Computer Disk Operating System (DOS) 3.3 applications on the
RT PC (TM). With AT Simulator, multiple DOS sessions can execute
simultaneously with one or more AIX/RT sessions, all on the RT PC
system console. Files and data can be exchanged between DOS and
   AIX/RT.
(TM) AIX, RT, RT PC and RT Personal Computer are trademarks of the
      International Business Machines Corporation.
    (R) Registered trademark of the International Business Machines
      Corporation.
   Charges:
        Program One-Time
        Number Charge
        5601-191 $500
Planned Availability Date: June 24, 1988
Note: Support for IBM X-Windows Version 2.1 will be available
   September 1988.
OVERVIEW HIGHLIGHTS
o Support for execution of DOS applications on the RT PC
o Multiple DOS sessions supported on system console
o Support for file/data sharing between AIX/RT and DOS
o X-Windows support including multiuser support via Transmission
       Control Protocol/Internet Protocol (TCP/IP)
o Shared or dedicated support for printers and diskettes
o Supports IBM 4-port and 8-port asynchronous adapters
o Supports all IBM RT PC console displays
o Does not require hardware slot.
   DESCRIPTION
The IBM AIX/RT Personal Computer AT Simulator provides the
capability for many DOS applications to execute on the RT PC system
console without requiring additional hardware. The DOS applications
run in "Real Mode" (that is, 80286 protected mode not supported) as
if they were executing on a Personal Computer AT with 640K of memory.
Interchange of files and data between AIX/RT and the AT Simulator is
accomplished by using AIX/RT conversion utilities.
Multiple DOS sessions can execute simultaneously, on the
system console, with other AIX/RT applications and tasks. Each
session requires a copy of DOS and the application to be run.
Multi-user support is provided via X-Windows and TCP/IP.
The AT Simulator can use but does not require a dedicated
mini-disk. Instead, the program can create AIX file(s) for use as a
simulated hard file, thus conserving RT PC disk space.
Supported IBM RT PC printers and diskettes can be shared
between AIX/RT and AT Simulator session(s). The AT Simulator
provides support for printers and plotters, including printers and
plotters attached to the IBM 4-port and 8-port asynchronous adapters,
and the two standard 6150 serial ports.
AT Simulator supports all IBM RT PC console displays. (IBM
6153, 6154, and 6155 displays emulate both the 5153 Color Graphics
Display and the 5151 PC Display.)
TECHINFO TECHNICAL INFORMATION
   SPECIFIED OPERATING ENVIRONMENT
MACHINE REQUIREMENTS: The IBM AIX/RT Personal Computer AT Simulator
requires an IBM RT PC Model 115 or 125 and attached display. Certain
PC AT applications may have other specific hardware requirements.
PROGRAMMING REQUIREMENTS: IBM AIX/RT Personal Computer AT Simulator
requires AIX/RT Operating System Version 2.2. DOS 3.3 is needed for
execution of the PC applications. X-Windows 2.1 is required to use
the X-Windows mode of AT Simulator. (Support for X-Windows
Version 2.1 will be available September 1988.)
COMPATIBILITY: AIX/RT Personal Computer AT Simulator is designed to
support application programs written for the Personal Computer AT.
Transfer of AIX/RT files and data requires use of AIX conversion
utilities that are provided in AIX/RT.
To initially demonstrate the compatibility and functionality
of the AIX/RT Personal Computer AT Simulator licensed program,
selected IBM licensed programs and non-IBM logo offerings will be
identified for this operating environment. The following are examples
of application programs that IBM plans to have tested by the product
vendors for use with the AT Simulator along with DOS 3.3. The
results of the testing will be published at planned availability.
This is not a comprehensive list of the programs that will run with
the AT Simulator, but a listing of the various programs that IBM
plans to test. IBM acknowledges the following trademarks and their

   LIMITATIONS:
o Program executes in Real Mode only
o Must be run from the RT system console
o Does not support OS/2 (TM)
o Input/output adapters that support the interrupt sharing protocol
       are not supported.
o Not recommended for applications that have timing dependencies
       (for example, Robotics)
o Does not support applications that directly access the fixed disk
o Does not support the use of COM 3 and COM 4 under DOS 3.3.
