[comp.sys.ibm.pc.rt] Hardware Flow Control on 4 Port Serial Cards

After a year of frustration and much to my amazement, I have learned that the
AIX supports hardware flow control on the serial ports.  The trick is to set
the 'pro' parameter to 'dc' when using the 'devices' command.  Then, the hardware
busy line from the peripheral must be routed to the CTS input on the RT.  The
IBM 10 pin to rs232 printer cable will support hardware handshaking.

I was unable to find this information in the manuals.  If it is documented, I
would appreciate a pointer to the pages.  It was only through a conversation with
a friend (Thanks Ted) that I found out that this might work on my machine's
configuration.

A followup:  Now that I know hardware flow control works, I dove back into the
documentation and actually found where the flow control parameters are documented.

In the Virtual Resource Manager Tech Reference (update by TNL 26 Sept 1986, my
latest version) Chapter 12, there is a discussion of the Asynchronous Device Driver.
In the discussion, the three valid entries of the 'pro' parameter are mentioned.
They are: 'dtr' - data terminal ready, 'cdstl' - connect data set to line, and
'dc' - direct connect.  There is more interesting information in this book.  However,
I wouldn't look in it as a normal course of events.  My initial reaction to the VRM
was, "That's an interesting way to achieve hardware independence".  But it looks like
some knowledge of the VRM is useful to those of us who are using the RT as a "UNIX box".

I'm fortunate that I had this book here. Originally, it had been ordered by mistake in
place of the AIX tech reference.  But I think you need them both.
