A few weeks ago I posted a request for help in setting up an RT to function as a gateway. We were running AIX 2.1. Several people responded but none of the ideas solved our problem. We've tracked it to the fact that we were trying to run the RT on a subnetted class B net without specifying the subnetmask in the /etc/net file. BUT!!! We also learned that you can't specify the mask as the IBM manuals tell you. Depending on the version of the manual you have, the worded explanation will talk about supplying the mask for the host portion of the address only (the lower two bytes in our case). The examples then go on to show either a mask for all four bytes or two bytes depending on the manual version. In all cases however, the examples show the mask in hex. This is wrong. We specified the mask for all four bytes in dotted decimal and everything is running fine!! We've also moved to AIX 2.2.1, but that has nothing to do with the above problem or fix. Hope this one hasn't bitten you. Tim Lynch
