[net.micro] Intel 310

lab@ecsvax.UUCP (12/05/84)

Intel Corporation recently made an offer to academic instituions
that provides an Intel 310 box with the 80286 processor, 512 Kbyte RAM
and the Xenix OS. Does anyone on the net have experince with this
machine? Has anyone else submitted a proposal to Intel to participate
in their offer? If you have submitted something, would you be interested
in a user group bulletin board? Reply via net to ecsvax!lab.

                                                Thanks

Netlanders,

Has anyone out there heard of an Intel 310 PC. The Army, in it's
wisdom, has decreed that it will be the "standard PC". Has anyone used one?
Is it a decent PC with any support (I really have little hope that it is)?
Please send replys to cadwall@ARDC. If there is any interest, I'll summarize
the results to the net.

Once again John Q. Public is getting the shaft, and Military INTELlegance is
holding true.

Having worked on one I expect a lot of our people to get killed. The only
thing I found it good for is a paper weight and shooting rocks.

From "Computer+Software News", Jan 28, 1985:

INTEL READIES 310/386 PROTOTYPE FOR 3RD QTR

Intel is expected to have a 310/386 32-bit
multiuser system prototyped by the third
	quarter, according to company officals.
	...
The prototype reportedly will be at least
three times faster than Intel's 80286 based
system and will be compatible with binary,
	DOS and Unix systems.
