#N:inmet:7000018:000:1579 inmet!nrh Jul 28 12:34:00 1983 A suggestion: let's create net.abortion. The common reasons to create a notes group are: 1. There's a lot of traffic about something 2. The traffic goes into a group that is not really concerned with the subject (politics in net.general, for example) 3. It becomes possible to define a notesgroup that one would love to unsubscribe to. 4. There's no way to convince the people submitting that they should use an existing group. 1. There's a LOT of traffic about it. net.women had nothing else for a long time (perhaps 100 messages). Pinheaded idiots have now spread the controversy to net.politics. 2. Both net.politics and net.women touch on the issue, but, as seems widely known, people are not easily converted on this issue -- the do seem to feel that OTHER people are easily convinced, or that it's worth trying -- hence, a lot of preaching from both sides. 3. I would love to create a group for these people, so that they can slam heads against each other until someone gives in. Remember the benefits from the creation of net.religion? 4. It's hard to convince someone who believes abortion is a moral issue that it should go in net.politics. It's hard to convince someone who believes that it is of special concern to women that it should not go in net.women. Creation of net.abortion would allow those interested to subscribe, and those NOT interested to unsubscribe. Comments? By the way, I'm not espcially happy about the use of the net for this debate -- I simply regard it as inevitable, and so suggest we make it as painless as possible.

i second nat's suggestion -- as the creator of (and first unsubscriber to) net.religion and net.philosophy, i can gleefully attest to the satisfaction i have derived from not having to read about god and man, life and death, heaven and hell, good and evil, pinheads and wireheads... let's add fetuses and unborn children to the list! (shall we call it net.dead.fetus to go along with net.dead.me (a.k.a. net.suicide), net.dead.grateful (formerly a.k.a. net.gdead) and net.dead.moth (a.k.a. net.flame)?) peter honeyman

Do we really need a net.abortion? We already have net.religion. :-) Hal Perkins uucp: {decvax|vax135|...}!cornell!hal Cornell Computer Science arpa: hal@cornell bitnet: hal@crnlcs

At CMU, the Computation Center machines have an "ethics.bboard"; perhaps something like this is where issues such as abortion should go? It also contained much about suicide, computer ethics, etc. Suggestions? From the padded cell of Dave Aronson uucp - idis!mi-cec!dja arpa - da2p%cmcctd@cmuc bell - (412) 682 - 9580

I think that net.abortion is a great idea. Once in place, it would be the ideal medium for exchanging tips (what worked and what didn't), and the fine points of technique (after dilating the cervex with direct injection of oxytocin...) Bob Freund

Net.philosophy can be used to discuss the ethics of abortion, although questions about whether abortion should be *legal* are probably outside the scope of that group. Kenneth Almquist

#R:inmet:7000018:inmet:7000019:000:855 inmet!nrh Aug 5 19:36:00 1983 The problem is that abortion seems to cover several issues. In particular, even though we have net.religion, one person who answered my original suggestion by mail suggested that "abortion is too important a topic to be ghettoized". The people who have strong feelings on the abortion issue tend to feel it's OK to spread their views in net.religion (I assume), net.politics, net.women, and probably lots of others. Since it's a multifaceted issue ("Should abortion be legal?" is one question, "Is abortion moral?" quite another) ("Are those two seperate questions" is a third) we've little hope of putting it in one larger newsgroup unless we slant it specifically for abortion. Perhaps "net.nobirth" or "net.contraception" (if only it would fit) would fill the bill, but I favor one specifically for abortion so I can choose that one to ignore.
